Tameside: There’s a big plan in the works to make bin collections better. The council is investing £2 million to tackle the issues with waste collection.

They’re adding four new wagons and hiring more staff. With around 11 million bins emptied each year, the demand is high.

More homes and a growing population mean the current system is struggling. Sometimes, bins aren’t emptied on schedule, leading to delays.

To fix this, the council has set aside £1.8 million for new equipment and tech. They also want to start food waste recycling for rural areas by April 2026.

Councillor Laura Boyle, who oversees environmental services, is optimistic. She said it’s great to see Tameside performing well compared to other councils.

However, she acknowledges there’s always room for improvement. No one likes missed collections, and they want to do better for residents.

This investment will help get more crews out and finish more rounds. Plus, the new tech will make routes more efficient and improve safety.

While changes won’t happen overnight, it’s a positive step for the future. She thanked the waste team for their hard work in serving the community.
