Salford: Dolly Parton is not just a music legend; she’s also a hero for kids. Her Imagination Library is now helping thousands of children in Salford get free books.

This program started back in 1995, inspired by Dolly’s dad who couldn’t read. Now, it’s grown to reach kids in five countries, giving away over three million books each month.

Recently, a new branch opened in Little Hulton. Families can sign up to receive a free book every month for their little ones, from birth to age five. How cool is that?

At the launch, kids enjoyed a storytelling session. They got to hear classics like “Where The Wild Things Are” and newer titles too. It’s all about making reading fun and accessible.

Parents just need to enter their postcode online to see if they qualify. There are seven other Imagination Libraries in Salford, all working to spread the joy of reading.

The local council is backing this initiative, aiming to inspire a love for books in children. When kids turn five, they even get a special graduation book and letter. How sweet is that?

Councillor Jim Cammell shared how important this is for improving literacy in Salford. He emphasized the need for kids to have the best start in life, especially after the pandemic.

Last year, Dolly celebrated giving away her 200 millionth book. Over six million of those have gone to families in the UK. That’s a huge impact!

Meg Fletcher from The Dollywood Foundation expressed excitement about partnering with Salford City Council. They’re eager to reach even more kids and make reading a monthly treat.

Local services will promote the program, ensuring families know about it. The library team is also on board, helping to spread the love for reading in the community.

Salford is working hard to become a UNICEF Child-Friendly City. They want to make sure kids grow up feeling safe and cared for, with plenty of opportunities to learn and play.

Despite being one of the most deprived areas, the Imagination Library is making a real difference. Since 2013, it has helped over 2,000 children in Salford.

Best of all, there’s no means testing. Every child can enroll and receive the same books, no matter their background. To sign up, just email the local council.
