Manchester Metropolitan University plans to build new skyscraper halls. This expansion aims to provide modern accommodation for thousands of students by 2029.

Manchester: Exciting news for students! Manchester Metropolitan University is planning to build new skyscraper halls. This could mean thousands more students will have a place to live.
They want to replace some old halls with modern towers. The current halls have 770 bedrooms, but the new plan will create 2,330 rooms. That’s a big jump!
The first phase should be ready by September 2029. It includes a tall 24-storey tower and two 11-storey buildings. There’s also an eight-storey block in the mix.
Then, in the second phase, they’ll add even more rooms. This will include a 30-storey skyscraper and two more towers. It’s all about giving students better living options.
Unite Students, the developer, says they want to provide high-quality accommodation. They’re aiming to meet the needs of today’s students.
There’s more to the plan! They’re also looking to add shops and a health space on Cambridge Street. It’s all about creating a vibrant campus.
And that’s not all! MMU is also getting a new library. It’s going to be a cool addition right next to the Mancunian Way flyover.
Andrew Fallon, the director of estates, says the new library will be a striking feature. It’ll serve as a gateway to the university and will open by September 2028.
This library will house the University’s Special Collection Museum and the Manchester Poetry Library. It’s the first public poetry library in the North West!
Plans for the new halls haven’t been submitted yet, but there’s a public consultation happening. You can share your thoughts online until February 6, and there’s a drop-in event on February 12.
