Stockport: Residents are really upset about their housing situation. They’ve been reaching out to councillors, saying they feel ignored by Stockport Homes.

Many have reported that repairs take ages, sometimes even years. It’s frustrating when you feel like no one is listening to your concerns.

Stockport Homes claims they have teams ready to help. But residents don’t see that happening. An independent review was done last year to check if the landlord should be managed by the council again.

The review found Stockport Homes is generally performing well. However, it pointed out issues like a defensive culture and poor communication with tenants.

Councillors have had to step in to help residents with complaints. They feel their input isn’t welcomed, which is concerning.

There were also questions about how Stockport Homes collects feedback from tenants. They prefer face-to-face chats, which some say gives better results than online surveys.

The review suggested 21 recommendations to improve things. This includes better ways for councillors to get responses and regular checks on housing conditions.

Councillor Matt Wynne expressed serious concerns about accountability. Another councillor, Aron Thornley, wants better tenant representation in the company.

“People are screaming down their doors because they’re very unhappy,” he said, highlighting the urgency of the situation.

Coun David Meller acknowledged the mixed feelings about Stockport Homes. While some data shows they’re doing well, many residents feel otherwise.

He emphasized the need to rebuild trust quickly. Helen McHale, the chief executive, said the review provides a clear path for improvements.

She mentioned that Stockport Homes is ready to work with the council on these issues. They want to focus on problem areas and improve data collection.

A spokesperson added that they recognize the need for improvement. They’re committed to ensuring that residents’ voices are heard at all levels.
