Salford: Residents, councillors, and an MP are really concerned about a new tower plan. They want to stop one of the tallest towers in the UK from being built over their retail park.

Henley Investment Management has big plans for Regent Retail Park. They want to create 3,300 new homes in ten tower blocks, with the tallest reaching 273 meters. But the community is not happy about it.

Thousands have signed petitions against the project. They worry about losing local shops and services. MP Rebecca Long-Bailey said this change would hurt the community.

At a public meeting, she pointed out the lack of affordable housing. She also mentioned the parking issues that residents already face. “We need more amenities, not a tower that will ruin our retail park,” she said.

Brendan Keville, a local councillor, echoed her concerns. He noted that the retail park is busy every day, serving many shoppers. He warned that ten years of construction would disrupt everyone’s lives.

The developer claims they will invite all current retail tenants back. They also say affordable housing will be part of the plan. But many locals remain skeptical.

While the proposal is still in early stages, it aligns with Salford council’s development goals. They aim to build 9,000 homes in the area by 2042, including new greenspaces and shops.

HIM is aware of the community’s worries and is trying to find a balance. They’re still working on the details, which will be decided later with council approval.

According to the Manchester Evening News, HIM is discussing affordable housing options with the council. They’re looking at other developments where 20% of homes are below market rates.

A spokesperson for HIM said this project could transform Ordsall and Salford. They see it as a billion-pound investment that will create a vibrant community.

They plan to include a park, shops, health facilities, and community spaces. They’re excited to bring back existing retail tenants and work with the local authority on affordable housing.
