Bolton’s Ryder Cup bid for 2035 is still on after a council decision. Despite public outcry, limited work will begin to maintain planning permission for the project.

This project is a big deal. It’s a £240 million plan for a golf complex and over 1,000 homes at Hulton Country Park. But it all hinges on whether Bolton gets the Ryder Cup in 2035. The decision on that won’t come until next year, which is a bit nerve-wracking.
The current planning permission runs out in October 2025. So, Peel needed to act fast. They asked the council for a variation on their agreement to allow some work on a ceremonial roadway. This would keep the planning permission alive while they wait for the Ryder Cup decision.
About 50 people showed up to oppose the plan. They were not happy at all. The chair of the committee, Coun John Walsh, called it a minor change. But some councillors, like Fazeelah Khan, were against it. They worried it would let development happen without the Ryder Cup commitment.
Opponents argued that the council should stick to the original planning conditions. They felt Peel shouldn’t be allowed to start work until the Ryder Cup is secured. Richard Knight from Peel insisted that this decision is crucial for the project and the local economy.
Despite the pushback, the committee voted 10 to 4 in favor of the variation. This led to loud shouts of “shame on you” from the crowd. Peel Land called this a transformational opportunity for Bolton, promising economic growth and job creation.
A spokesperson for Bolton Council expressed excitement about keeping the Hulton Park bid alive. They see it as a chance to create a major sporting destination and benefit the community. It’s a big moment for Bolton, and they’re hoping for the best outcome.
