Residents of Meadow Mill face dire conditions as they return home after flooding
Stockport: Residents are heading back to their apartments at Meadow Mill, even though the place is a mess. They’re dealing with no power or running water after the flooding hit hard.
It all started on New Year’s Day when heavy rain caused chaos in Greater Manchester. Meadow Mill was evacuated, and since then, folks have been left in the dark—literally and figuratively. They’ve been waiting for updates on when they can return home, but it’s been frustrating.
Many are running low on cash for hotels and feel they have no choice but to go back. Some are confused about who to contact for help, whether it’s their estate agent or the management company, CERT. They’ve been told the building isn’t safe to live in right now.
During a recent visit, some tenants were seen moving back in, desperate to save money. David Howarth, who’s lived there for a year, said he had to return because he couldn’t afford the hotel anymore. It’s freezing inside, and he’s just trying to make do.
Another resident, a 30-year-old woman, shared her struggles. She and her husband moved to the area recently and don’t have family nearby. They’ve already paid six months’ rent in advance, and now they’re stuck with no money for extra accommodation.
She expressed her frustration, saying they need money for food and other essentials. The building is cold and dark, and they’re just trying to survive with candles and a WiFi dongle. It’s not safe, and they feel abandoned.
Amy Hayes, another resident, has been crashing at her parents’ place since the flooding. She’s considering going back to her flat despite the lack of power. Luckily, her landlord finally agreed to put her in a hotel, but the stress is overwhelming.
A CERT spokesperson mentioned that residents can collect their belongings during the day, but the building isn’t safe for living. They’ve reminded landlords of their responsibilities, but for many, it feels like no one is listening.
