Top GP warns of severe winter illnesses affecting many, with advice on recovery
Bolton: The UK is facing a tough winter with a surge of viruses hitting hospitals hard. A leading GP has raised concerns about the severity of these illnesses.
People are really feeling the effects of flu and norovirus this year. It seems like these bugs have changed, making them hit harder. Many folks are dealing with long-lasting symptoms, feeling unwell for weeks, especially during the holiday season.
Dr. Helen Wall, a GP in Bolton, mentioned that most of these cases are viral. She understands that people want quick fixes like antibiotics, but that’s not how it works with viruses.
Right now, flu cases in hospitals are climbing in England. Just last week, there were over 5,400 flu patients in hospitals, which is a big jump from the previous week.
In Greater Manchester, hospital staff have been talking about serious overcrowding. Just before Christmas, reports came in about emergency rooms being packed, with patients waiting far too long for beds.
Some patients have even been stuck in ambulances for over an hour, waiting to get into the hospital. It’s a tough situation, especially for those who are well enough to go home but can’t because there’s no care available.
Dr. Wall reassured that while A&Es are busy, the flu patients being admitted really need the care. She noted a staggering 360% increase in flu admissions compared to last year.
Viruses thrive in cold weather, and Dr. Wall explained that our bodies aren’t as good at fighting them off when it’s chilly. She emphasized the importance of rest and staying hydrated when you’re sick.
Flu can hit you hard and fast. One minute you’re fine, and the next, you’re feeling feverish and achy. Unlike a mild cold, real flu can knock you out for days.
Norovirus is also on the rise, with reports of it being more severe this year. Families are getting hit hard, with some needing hospital care for dehydration.
