Manchester: Workers at Capita are striking today. They’re taking a stand over pay issues. The union, Unite, says the company won’t negotiate a pay award for 2024.

This strike is expected to last until February 5. Staff were supposed to get a pay award last April. But Capita postponed talks, promising a pay rise in October that never happened.

Unite pointed out that Capita is making profits. Yet, they still haven’t given workers a raise. In December, workers voted to strike, and now it’s happening.

About 1,000 employees are involved in this dispute. Picket lines will be set up in Manchester and Glasgow. They’re ready to make their voices heard.

Sharon Graham, Unite’s general secretary, said Capita can afford to pay its workers fairly. She emphasized that the company needs to understand how strongly workers feel about this issue.

Capita staff in both cities work on the Royal London account. This strike will likely cause delays and disruptions for that account.

Dominic Hook, a Unite national officer, criticized Capita for not negotiating. He warned that ignoring the workers won’t make the problem disappear.

The Manchester Evening News has reached out to Capita for their side of the story.
