Plans to demolish a North Manchester hospital building are underway as the search for funding for a replacement continues
North Manchester: A building at North Manchester General Hospital is on the chopping block. They’re looking to tear down Park House, which has been empty since November.
That’s when the new North View facility opened, costing a whopping £105 million. But even with this shiny new place, there’s some serious concern about the old buildings around it.
Some NHS folks are worried that North View will feel like a modern oasis surrounded by crumbling Victorian structures. It’s a bit of a head-scratcher, really.
The whole site has a big redevelopment plan in the works. They want to create a top-notch health campus in one of the country’s most deprived areas. Sounds ambitious, right?
This plan includes a revamped general hospital, a walk-in center, and even a training hub for future doctors and nurses. Plus, they’re thinking about on-site housing for staff and patients, a wellbeing hub, and shops to boost the local economy.
They first revealed this masterplan back in 2021, after Boris Johnson promised to build 40 new hospitals. But since then, only North View and a big car park have popped up.
Both Conservative and Labour governments have been slow to cough up the cash needed for the rest of the project. It’s frustrating for everyone involved.
The Manchester Evening News is pushing hard for the government to step up and support the urgent rebuilding of North Manchester General Hospital.
In response to the worries about North View becoming isolated, a spokesperson from the Department of Health and Social Care said they’re committed to the New Hospital Programme. They admitted the previous plan was behind schedule and funding ran out.
They’re now working on a timeline that’s realistic and fully funded to ensure the NHS can provide the best care possible.
