Greater Manchester: It’s been a rough couple of weeks for the local dining scene. A bunch of restaurants and bars have closed, and it’s left many people surprised.

The cost of living is hitting everyone hard. People are cutting back on dining out, which is tough for restaurants. Business owners are also facing rising costs and tough trading conditions.

The recent Budget didn’t help either. It promised more taxes and increased wages, making it even harder for businesses to stay afloat.

Some big names have already closed, like Green’s and WOOD. And now, Crowded House in Bury is set to close its doors for good this month.

Johanne and Dave Banks, the owners, opened Crowded House in 2015. They served everything from steaks to sharing boards. But rising costs have made it impossible to keep going.

They mentioned that their bills have skyrocketed. Utilities doubled, food costs jumped by 38%, and rent went up by 12%. With a 41% drop in customers, they had no choice.

Johanne said, “It’s the cost of living crisis. People are cutting back.” They’ve tried everything to keep the restaurant running, but it’s just not working.

Another closure is Burnt Truffle in Heswall, run by chef Gary Usher. He called it a “sad day” as he announced the closure. He’s been vocal about the struggles in the industry.

Gary opened Burnt Truffle in 2015, but he couldn’t make it work anymore. He said, “If people don’t come, it doesn’t work.”

In Wigan, the Damhouse Tea Room is also closing due to losses. The owners said it’s no longer sustainable. They plan to reflect on future services for the community.

The Botanist has also closed its MediaCityUK venue. The owners were disappointed but said it was due to the landlord seeking new tenants.

Lastly, the Nag’s Head at Haughton has shut down. The owners tried their best but cited “current economic woes” as the reason for closing.

It’s a tough time for the hospitality industry in Greater Manchester. Many are hoping for better days ahead.
